Accelerating the Fight Against Ransomware with the Cloud

Welcome to 2022. Not only is ransomware still here, but it’s not going away any time soon. Ransomware hits a business every 11 seconds, according to CyberSecurity Ventures, and global damages are expected to reach $40B this year. Yet, our customers have never paid a ransom, thanks to Nasuni Rapid Ransomware Recovery capabilities.

Recently I hosted “Accelerating the Fight Against Ransomware with the Cloud,” an exciting, information-packed webinar on the threat of ransomware and how to address it in 2022 and beyond. My guests were Microsoft Chief Security Advisor Jim Eckart—who was previously CISO at major multinationals like Eli Lilly and Coca-Cola—and noted 20x Microsoft MVP and technology expert Brien Posey.

The webinar, which you can view on-demand here, covers a range of ransomware-related subjects, broadly grouped into three topics:

  • The ransomware threatscape, including the impact of our remote, distributed workforce; how malware is evolving; prevention, detection, and more.
  • Common myths about ransomware, such as the fallacy that paying the ransom guarantees recovery.
  • Why traditional and even modern cloud backups fail to deliver, and the importance of being able to recover quickly.

Overall, the webinar gives you a clear picture of how to accelerate the fight against ransomware with the cloud, and I’d encourage you to set a few minutes aside to watch. Until then, here are a few of the key takeaways.

1. Preparation Is Key—but It Doesn’t Have To Be Complicated
We talk about some of the best practices for prevention and early detection of ransomware, while acknowledging an unfortunate truth. Even if you do everything right, ransomware may still find its way into your organization. If or when that does happen, we emphasize the need for a data protection solution that offers immutability, surgical recovery, rapid restores, and infinite recovery points.

2. Executives Are Paying Attention
Eckart has been a security executive at several major global companies, and in his role at Microsoft, he’s always meeting with CISOs at other multinationals. “Almost every single CISO I talk to is worried about ransomware,” Eckart says, noting that their executive leadership teams are inquiring about it, too. “It’s absolutely top of mind for security leaders.”

This was no surprise to my colleagues and I here at Nasuni, as it comes up in almost every conversation with prospective and existing customers. The former want to know how we can protect their files against ransomware, and the latter often thank us for equipping them with a reliable, fast recovery solution that makes them look good to executive leadership.

3. Old School Backup Doesn’t Cut It
We spent a decent portion of the webinar detailing the shortcomings of backup as it relates to ransomware. Posey talks about how there will almost always be some data loss when you restore from backup, and why if you perform a blanket restore following a ransomware attack, you might end up getting rid of good file data. Plus, ransomware is now capable of targeting backups and operating like a time bomb—lying dormant and undetected, for extended periods of time.

4. Time Is Critical
When it’s time to recover from backups following a ransomware attack, you might get your files back, but the process of restoring them could take days or weeks—even with modern cloud backup solutions. If your business is disrupted for that long, then you should really ask yourself whether your current way of protecting data is working.

In the webinar, we discuss how important RPOs and RTOs are to your business. It’s not just about whether your backups are safe. The question is how long it will take for you to restore those files, and are you going to lose any data? Will it be quick enough so your users, productivity, and apps aren’t impacted? Or, will your users be left without access to critical data for days or even weeks?

I always say it. But, an important theme this webinar drives home is that time is absolutely critical when it comes to ransomware attacks. You need strong, reliable RPOs and RTOs to ensure that your business is up and running again as quickly as possible. You need to be able to perform surgical recoveries, not just blanket restores, to minimize work lost, and you need to be able to do this as quickly as possible.

I was truly honored to tag team this insightful webinar on ransomware in the enterprise with heavy-hitting industry rockstars, Jim and Brien. I encourage you to check out the webinar, and if you’d like to learn more, check out this helpful infographic and related video.
